LESSON BOOK

Since 2003 I have been teaching vocal and piano lessons to students of all ages. During this time I have explored numerous books to assist in my teaching. There are many popular catalogs for studying piano from beginner to advanced, written by a variety of authors. In my search I have yet to come across a vocal method book that covers the same content as the piano or any other instrumental method. I have found vocal warm-up books with CDs, but none of them have weekly lessons or a well rounded, holistic education. This is why I have decided to create my own book and CD. This method will be a tool to assist teachers and students taking lessons. It is beneficial for the teachers because it focuses the lessons and has clear concepts for learning basic music knowledge. Students will find the accompanying CD very useful for home practice. Parents also will be satisfied that their children have a workbook to study from like other instrumentalists.It will be available this 2012 for purchase. Biography

For the true artist, art is like the mythical siren’s song. It will always call you. So when Robyn Pauhl, one of Canada’'s most promising young vocalist, decided to take a hiatus, there was little doubt she would return, more impassioned than ever. Robyn has indeed returned, to the delight of fans across the country. Her live performances continue to keep audiences enthralled, not only through her ability to sing, but her ability interpret her songs anew and bring them to life every time.Robyn has been seen coast to coast, appearing on everything from local cable shows to highly rated television news programs such as Canada AM. She has been featured on the cover of the Hamilton Magazine and a two page spread in Hmm...The Hamilton Men's Magazine. In 2003, she released "One For My Baby", her first official album. The collection of jazz and blues songs was lauded by critics, who were impressed by the ability and confidence displayed on an entirely independent release and a debut, to boot.Robyn’'s long-awaited follow-up EP arrived in 2009. The new material sees Robyn turn her passions toward R&B, pop, and rock. Robyn wrote and produced her latest songs with the help of New World Son, many other local musicians, and engineer Justin Koop at B Town Sound in Burlington.“The way I am making the album is by living it,” says Robyn. She has been recording the songs as soon as they are written, capturing the original raw emotion and depth of each note and lyric. She is recording the soundtrack of her soul in real time. Her new approach reflects the maturation of her talent and the sum of her varied experiences as an artist. While only in her twenties, she has already opened shows for U.S. country stars George Jones at Lulu's in Kitchener, Loretta Lynn at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton and the International Center in Toronto. As well as for some eminent Canadian country acts such as Michelle Wright, Prairie Oyster, Jason McCoy, Beverly Mahood, Jim Witter, jazz artist Carol Wellsman, and most recently Robyn performed in concert with world renowned jazz bassist, Dave Holland.An enthralling performer, Robyn has a voice that has enough power and range to make it worth remarking on. Robyn sounds as if her passion could swallow the world. What lifts her performances miles above nastalgia is that she delivers her feelings with astonishing power and ebullience. One can see the emotional intensity that Robyn brings to everything she sings. There is a sincerity in her singing that pierces her audiences, spurring an immediate connection to her listeners.Her love for country started at age ten and she was cleaning house at singing competitions. Next she went on to placing first at the Canadian National Exhibition's Country Singing Contest. Then in 1997 she won the Ontario Country Music Association's Rising Star Award. At fifteen, Robyn decided to get some studio experience and went to Nashville to complete a six song music demo with Odie Blackmon. Robyn's love for music extended into her high school life where she was the lead singer for the school's jazz band. In 2000, Robyn joined the Hamilton All Star Jazz Band, as the lead singer for two years. They performed at many venues including Hamilton Place with the Philharmonic, the Rex Hotel in Toronto, Hess Village Jazz Festival, Redeemer College, and the Tivoli Theatre. They also recorded a live jazz CD, which was released at the beginning of January 2003.In 2005, Robyn successfully completed the three year program at Humber College on an academic scholarship for vocal jazz performance, while continuing her career as a much-booked singer throughout Ontario. She was the lead vocalist in The Denny Christianson's Humber College Studio Jazz Ensemble. This group played at numerous venues throughout the year including, festivals, The Rex Hotel in Toronto ,and The Jazz FM 91.1 Sound of Toronto Jazz Concert Series. The ensemble backed-up guest artists, such as world renowned bassist Dave Holland and Canadian jazz vocalist Ranee Lee who performed in concert at Humber that year. As well this group recorded an album at the CBC recording studios in Toronto and was released in the winter of 2006. Artist HistoryAt age two, Robyn would love to watch musical movies repeatedly. Her favourite movies were "The Sound of Music" and "Annie". Robyn learned how to rewind and play the VCR before she turned two years old. She confidently would sing all the words without missing a beat. A fun loving girl and entertainer, she learned to play the ukelele in grade three. Robyn began performing publically at age nine after discovering Patsy Cline. She had a true love for country music. Robyn's grandmother played "Walkin' After Midnight" for her and she recalls "immediately liking the record because of the emotion and the way Patsy sang." Robyn's musical influences include such artists as Trisha Yearwood, Patsy Cline, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Chet Baker, Janis Joplin, and Susan Tedeschi. She states, "I admire these singers because they sing from their hearts. They have a passion in their singing and they sing quality songs."As Robyn moves forward with her career she will continue to perfect her craft as a vocalist and apply her knowledge of theory, composition, arranging for small and large ensembles, as well as the art of improvisation to her music. By the age of eleven she was playing and singing across Ontario. Since then her mature voice and attitude towards the music business propelled her quickly to the forefront of the Canadian Music Scene. Robyn, a high achiever applied herself to the "ins and outs" of the music business quickly laying the foundation for a long and successful career in the industry. A talented young woman beautiful on the inside and outside, Robyn left audiences wanting to hear just one more song!

~ Winner of The 2009 Hamilton Music Award for People's Choice Independent Music Teacher of the Year In 2005, Robyn graduated with honours from the Humber College Music Program in Toronto, ON. She attained knowledge in theory, composition and arranging for string sections, horns, and big bands. She has eight years of teaching experience in vocal, theory, and piano. She specializes in Pop, Jazz, Broadway, Blues, R & B, Country, and Rock vocal styles. She teaches preliminary, grade one and grade two RCM rudiments, jazz theory and harmony. In 2012, Robyn will be releasing her first vocal method book/CD. Her philosophy of teaching is making singers into musicians, so that they will be fully educated as their peers playing instruments. The book will focus on proper vocal technique, weekly lessons, vocal exercises, basic piano technique, theory, and homework.She charges $25 per half an hour or $35 per hour for local in-home lessons plus gas, if travel is required. EP Review by Wildy's World 2009 Robyn Pauhl has long been considered one of Canada’s most exciting young vocalists. She broke into national prominence in 2003 singing with some of the country’s top jazz talent. Pauhl took several years off, but returned in 2008 with a self-titled EP, Robyn Pauhl. While her style runs the gamut from Rock to RnB to Country, Pauhl seems to have concentrated on the country side of her persona here. Robyn Pauhl is a limited edition EP in advance of a full-length album due sometime in 2009.Robyn Pauhl opens with Beginning To Fall In Love, a Gospel and Soul inflected Country tune that stands up to the best Nashville has to offer. Pauhl has this gorgeous, powerful voice that wraps the listener up in a cascade of sound, and she uses it to full effect here. Up next is All I Said, a Country/Rock hybrid that straddles the ravine between Pop and Adult Contemporary. Meet Me In The Middle is the class of the album. This is a classic country tune with southern Gospel accents that could be an immediate hit on country radio with the right push. Pauhl carries this song like a torch, leaving the listener in wonder.Pauhl tacks a different tack on Westbound Like The Sun, sounding like a 1970’s AM Pop Crooner. It’s actually quite a song, just a little dated sounding. Pauhl is in amazing voice here. I Feel Nothing Now is piano, viola and Pauhl. It’s a tear jerker that’s beautiful in its abject sadness. Remember Me falls into the country/blues hybrid done so well by folks like Bonnie Raitt, showing another aspect of Pauhl and what her voice is capable of. It’s a perfect way to close out the EP.Robyn Pauhl is amazing. There’s no other word for it. If she’s not the next country superstar then it will prove once and for all that they’ve forgotten what it’s all about on Music Row.
